63 years ago today, on September 9, 1962 (August 11, 1962 in the lunar calendar), the Chinese Air Force missile unit shot down the US U-2 high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft for the first time. Since the end of November 1957, Taiwan's Kuomintang army has used US-aided RB-57D, RF-101 high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft and P-2V night reconnaissance aircraft to conduct continuous reconnaissance and harassment on the mainland of the motherland. Our Air Force took off the J-5 one after another, and the MiG-19 fighter was unable to hit the enemy target due to insufficient flight height. The largest caliber 100-mm anti-aircraft gun our army has, with an effective range of only 12,000 meters to the air, cannot hit the enemy aircraft above 18,000 meters at all. On October 6, 1958, China's first surface-to-air missile unit was officially established in an auditorium in Qinghe, a suburb of Beijing. The establishment of the surface-to-air missile unit effectively contained the arrogance of the enemy. In the two years from October 1959 to August 1961, three enemy high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft were shot down, which forced the early retirement of the RB-57D high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft known as the Air Reconnaissance Overlord. In order to obtain more political, economic and military intelligence of New China, the United States delivered the newly developed U-2 high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft nicknamed "Black Widow" to Taiwan in 1962. The U-2 reconnaissance aircraft, nicknamed "Black Widow", was a high-altitude spy reconnaissance aircraft developed by Martin Company. It flew for the first time on August 4, 1955. Its length was 15.4 meters, wingspan was 24.38 meters, height was 4.65 meters, weight was 7.9 tons in the air, and the stratosphere with an altitude of more than 25,000 meters was more than twice that of ordinary aircraft. It was loaded with special cameras for reconnaissance and could fly continuously for more than 9 hours in the air. A total of 55 aircraft were produced. It was one of the important sources of information for the United States in the Cold War era. For decades, it has fought all over the world, reconnaissance the Soviet Union, Cuba, North Korea, China, Vietnam and other countries. In the first half of 1962 alone, the U2 reconnaissance aircraft carried out as many as 11 deep reconnaissance on the Chinese mainland. On September 7, 1962, Air Force Commander Liu Yalou ordered the implementation of the "Erbium Lure Plan". A bomber group was ordered to move from Nanjing to Nanchang. This high-profile transition really alarmed the CIA and Taiwan's intelligence agencies. The next day, the U2 was dispatched, and the missile force was ready. In the early morning of September 9, the U2 was dispatched again. It was never expected that it had penetrated the ambush circle arranged by our army. Three missiles took off, and the U-2 aircraft was smashed into pieces by the web of death woven by more than 3,600 pieces of shrapnel. By September 1967, the Chinese Air Force had shot down five U2 aircraft. Since then, enemy aircraft have never entered the mainland for reconnaissance and photography. In February 1972, President Nixon visited Beijing and promised to stop all reconnaissance flights over the Chinese mainland. This contest in the blue sky ended in the victory of the Chinese Air Force. On July 23, 1964, Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Zhu De and other party and state leaders received all the officers and men of the Second Battalion in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. This was the only formed unit that Comrade Mao Zedong received after the founding of the People's Republic of China.
