Breaking-News >> TodayHistory June 9, 1925 Kemal implemented reforms in Turkey
100 years ago today, on June 9, 1925 (April 19, 1925 lunar calendar), Kemal implemented reforms in Turkey. After Kemal taught Latin and Turkey gained national independence and national liberation, Kemal's government immediately formulated a new constitution, abolished the system of theocracy and established the country's republican system. But the whole Turkish society still has strong feudal and religious customs, and the progress and development of Turkish society have been seriously hindered. From the summer of 1925, Kemal launched a profound reform movement across the country, with the aim of liberating Turkish society from the shackles of feudalism and religion. The main contents include: 1. Secularization movement. In the summer of 1925, Kemal encouraged the masses to give up traditional clothing and promote suits. Under the efforts of Kemal, on November 3, 1925, the parliament passed a decree calling on the whole country to adopt top hats and caps, abolishing the old habit of men wearing fez hats and women wearing veils and headscarves. Secondly, the government also closed some Islamic religious facilities, abolished religious titles, abolished the Hikra calendar and adopted the Gregorian calendar. 2. Judicial reform. At the same time as the abolition of the caliphate in 1924, the Islamic religious law was also abolished, but no new laws were enacted to replace the religious law at that time. In 1926, the Grand National Assembly promulgated the Civil Law, Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, Civil Procedure Law, Court Organization Law, Commercial Law, Lawyers Law, etc., and soon announced the abolition of religious judges at all levels. Since then, Turkey has gradually freed itself from the fetters of religious law and established a modern judicial system. 3. Liberate women. Under the shackles of feudal and religious systems, the status of Turkish women was extremely low. Without any rights, they should cover their whole body with a robe when going out. Turkey promulgated a new law to repeal many laws that discriminated against women, and women's political rights were also recognized. IV. Literary reform. On August 9, 1928, Turkey announced the adoption of the Latin alphabet to replace the Arabic alphabet. The new Turkish alphabet after the reform overcame many shortcomings of the old alphabet. It has the characteristics of being easy to learn and use. It helps to develop and promote national culture, weakens the feudal regime, and greatly accelerates the process of secularization. It enhances the Turkish national pride. The reform movement promoted and guided by Kemal was a social revolution of far-reaching significance, which largely eliminated the influence and control of feudal thought, especially religious theocracy, on all aspects of society, and established a modern concept of life in Turkey. Thus consolidating the new republic and laying a good foundation for the development of the Turkish nation and society.
