97 years ago today, on October 13, 1928 (September 1, 1928 in the lunar calendar), the excavation of the Yinxu in Anyang began. On October 13, 1928, the Institute of History and Language of Academia Sinica sent archaeologist Dong Zuobin to conduct a trial excavation in Xiaotun Village, Anyang, Henan. This was the beginning of the excavation of the Yinxu in Anyang, and it was also the beginning of independent scientific archaeological excavations by Chinese academic institutions. At the end of the 19th century, a large number of tortoise shells and animal bones engraved with ancient characters were unearthed in Anyang, and the locals ground them into pieces for medicine. The philologist Wang Yirong identified this script as a Shang Dynasty script, which immediately attracted the attention of Chinese and foreign scholars. At the same time, a large number of oracle bone fragments were lost to foreign countries. The excavation organized by Academia Sinica is the first planned excavation in China, Review: The Long History of Chinese Civilization
