Breaking-News >> TodayHistory Petersson, suspected of assassinating Palme, was released on October 12, 1989
On this day, 36 years ago, October 12, 1989 (September 13, 1989 in the lunar calendar), Petrsson, suspected of assassinating Palme, was released. On October 12, 1989, the Swedish Court of Appeal unanimously ruled to immediately release Petersson, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for the assassination of former Swedish Prime Minister Palme. In July 1989, the Stockholm District Court convicted Petersson of the assassination of Palme and sentenced him to life imprisonment. Petersson refused to accept and appealed. The Court of Appeal opened last month to accept the case, and the original witness appeared in court again. Palme's widow, Lispat-Palme, said she was 100 per cent certain that Petrsson was the one who was staring at Palme only steps away after she was shot and she suffered a gunshot wound. In addition, prosecutors failed to provide more new evidence. The court held that since the murder weapon had not been found so far and no one could testify that Peter had released the gun or held the gun, the testimony of Mrs. Palme and others was not enough to determine that Petersson was the murderer, so it unanimously decided to release Petersson immediately. Petersson's defense lawyer said he would demand hundreds of thousands of crowns in damages for Petersson's 301-day detention.
