31 years ago today, on September 11, 1994 (August 6, 1994 in the lunar calendar), English educator Xu Guozhang passed away in Beijing. Professor Xu Guozhang, a well-known English educator, linguist and doctoral supervisor of Beijing Foreign Studies University, died in Beijing on September 11, 1994 at the age of 79 due to ineffective treatment of illness. Professor Xu Guozhang was born on November 25, 1915 in Haining County, Zhejiang Province. He studied at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Beijing Tsinghua University and Southwest Associated University; in 1947, he went to the UK to study; He returned to China in October 1949 and has served as a professor at Beijing Foreign Studies University. He joined the Communist Party of China in January 1957. Professor Xu Guozhang has worked tirelessly and selflessly throughout his decades of educational career, and devoted his life to foreign language education and language research in my country until the last moment of his life. As a well-known English educator in my country, the college textbook "English" edited by him has been popular across the country since the early 1960s and has lasted for more than 30 years, becoming a model for similar textbooks in English teaching in my country. Professor Xu Guozhang is also an outstanding linguist. He has learned from China and the West, is knowledgeable about the past and the present, and has made pioneering contributions in various fields of linguistics. He has many works, including many works such as "The Definition, Function, and Origin of Language" and "The Arbitrary Problem of Language Signs", which are unique and have become famous articles in contemporary linguistic research. He has also made many achievements in academic fields such as foreign literature, translation and cultural studies, as well as Lu Xun studies, and has contributed to cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries and left us a valuable cultural heritage.
