On September 17, 1826, Bernhard Riemann was born in the village of Bresselenz, Hanover, northern Germany. His father was a poor rural priest. He started school at the age of six, entered pre-university studies at the age of 14, and entered the University of Göttingen at the age of 19 to study philosophy and theology at his father's wishes, so that he could inherit his father's wishes and become a priest in the future. Because he loved mathematics since he was a child, Riemann studied philosophy and theology while also taking some mathematics classes. At that time, the University of Göttingen was one of the centers of mathematics in the world, and some famous mathematicians such as Gauss, Weber, and Steer all taught at the school. Riemann was infected by the atmosphere of mathematics teaching and research here and decided to give up theology and specialize in mathematics. In 1847, Riemann transferred to the University of Berlin and became a student of Jacobi, Dirichlet, Steiner, and Eisenstein. In 1849, he returned to the University of Göttingen to pursue a doctorate and became a student of Gauss in his later years.
