On September 17, 1826, German mathematician Riemann was born
On this day, 199 years ago, September 17, 1826 (August 16, 1826 in the lunar calendar), the German mathematician Riemann was born. On September 17, 1826, Bernhard Riemann was born in the village of Bresselenz, Hanover, northern Germany. His father was a poor rural priest. He started school at the age of six, entered pre-university studies at the age of 14, and entered the University of Göttingen at the age of 19 to study philosophy and theology at his father's wishes, so that he could inherit his father's wishes and become a priest in the future. Because he loved mathematics since he was a child, Riemann studied philosophy and theology while also taking some mathematics classes. At that time, the University of Göttingen was one of the centers of mathematics in the world, and some famous mathematicians such as Gauss, Weber, and Steer all taught at the school. Riemann was infected by the atmosphere of mathematics teaching and research here and decided to give up theology and specialize in mathematics. In 1847, Riemann transferred to the University of Berlin and became a student of Jacobi, Dirichlet, Steiner, and Eisenstein. In 1849, he returned to the University of Göttingen to pursue a doctorate and became a student of Gauss in his later years. In 1851, Riemann received a doctorate in mathematics; l In 854, he was hired as a non-staff lecturer at the University of Göttingen; in 1857, he was promoted to associate professor; in 1859, he was hired as professor, replacing Dirichlet, who passed away. Due to years of poverty and fatigue, Riemann began to suffer from pleurisy and tuberculosis less than a month after his marriage in 1862, and spent most of the next four years in Italy for medical treatment and recuperation. He died of illness in Italy on July 20, 1866, at the age of 39. Riemann is one of the most original mathematicians in the history of mathematics in the world. Riemann's works are not many, but they are extremely profound and rich in the creation and imagination of concepts. In his short life, Riemann did many foundational and creative work in many fields of mathematics and established great achievements for world mathematics. Comments: When I learned Riemann's laws, I thought he was a genius, and future generations admired him!!!
