On October 11, 1758, German astronomer Obers was born
267 years ago today, October 11, 1758 (September 10, 1758 in the lunar calendar), the German astronomer Obers was born. Olbers (Wilhelm 1758.10.11 -1840.3.2) was a German astronomer. Born in Albergen, near Bremen. Graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Göttingen in 17810. He then practiced medicine in Bremen, but always spent his nights in astronomical observations. He turned the top floor of his residence into an observatory. He was initially passionate about studying comets, and in 1797 he developed a method to determine the orbit of comets, which is still in use today. He discovered a total of five comets, of which the one discovered in 1815 is still called Comet Orbers. Orbers is one of the leading figures in the search for the planet in the gap between Mars and Jupiter. Although Piazzi's discovery was the first record, Obers rediscovered the planet after Gauss calculated its orbit. He also discovered the asteroid Optis in 1802 and the asteroid Vesta in 1804. He first proposed that these asteroids originated from the explosion of a medium-sized planet that was orbiting somewhere in what is now the asteroid belt. There may still be many people today who think this is a valuable proposition. The 1002 asteroid discovered was named Oberia in memory of the Oberts. Comment: Discovering a planet is great. Orbers actually discovered several asteroids!
