Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On October 23, 1923, the Hamburg Uprising broke out in Germany
102 years ago today, on October 23, 1923 (September 14, 1923), the uprising broke out in Hamburg, Germany. In 1923, French and Belgian troops occupied the Ruhr region of Germany, which led to the deterioration of the German economy and the rise of strikes. In central Germany, in Saxony and Thuringia, the revolutionary movement grew rapidly, and on October 10 and 16, respectively, the "Left Alliance" government with communist participation was established. The Stresemann government declared martial law under the "Extraordinary Authorization Act" passed on October 13, and sent troops to suppress the revolutionary movements in Saxony and Thuringia. On October 21, the Hamburg regional communist organization held a meeting and decided to start an armed uprising on October 23. On this day, under Thelmann, the workers occupied the suburban police stations, took control of the workers' housing areas, and declared the establishment of Soviets. The government sent the Wehrmacht to suppress the uprising. After three days of fierce fighting, the uprising finally failed. The government dissolved the "League of Left" governments in Saxony and Thuringia in November. The Communist Party was also banned on November 23.
