On this day 44 years ago, on December 2, 1981 (November 7, 1981 lunar calendar), the oldest temple in the world was discovered. On December 2, 1981, archaeologists from the United States and Spain discovered the world's oldest temple in a cave near the port city of Santander in northern Spain not long ago. According to research, this well-preserved temple was built in the early Stone Age and is 14,000 years old. Located at the entrance of the cave, the temple covers an area of about 11 square meters. In the center, there is a 1.8-meter-long, 1.2-meter-wide, 15-cm-thick sacrificial board weighing nearly 1 ton and an unusual stone carving head. This stone carving head is 35 cm high, 33 cm wide and 45 cm thick. It is placed on a small mound and faces the entrance of the cave. Carvers used natural vertical cracks in the stone to divide the stone head into two parts, half of which is a human face with a beard, and the other half is an animal face. The horizontal cracks on the lower part of the head form the mouths of people and animals. The stone head is a unique discovery of this century, and it is of particular significance in archaeology, which has attracted the attention of scholars. Freeman, an anthropologist at the University of Chicago, said the temple they found was used as a place for some kind of collective sacrifice. Paintings, funeral offerings and animal remains in the cave show that religious beliefs date back to 50,000 years ago.
