Saint Bartholomew Massacre, France

massacre
The Massacre of Saint-Barthélemy (French for Massacre de la Saint-Barthélemy) was a horrific atrocity committed by French Catholic mobs against domestic Protestants, the Huguenots, which began on August 24, 1572 and lasted for several months. The uncompromising intransigence of the Huguenots made the event a turning point in the French Wars of Religion.
In the early morning of August 24, 1572, tens of thousands of Catholic people in Paris collaborated with police soldiers to carry out a bloody massacre of Huguenots in the city. They broke into the house according to the white cross drawn in front of the Huguenots 'residences, killing most of the people who were still asleep, and then threw their bodies into the Seine River. All senior officials and nobles, including General Coligny, were executed, and even Charles IX's brother-in-law Henry and Prince Comte were forced to convert to Catholicism. Following the Paris Massacre, Huguenots were massacred in many other French towns. This triggered a protracted religious war, which did not stop until the southern amnesty was promulgated in 1598.
It was the bloodiest night in Paris history.
Key words: August 24, 1572, St. Bartholomew's Massacre
