An important meeting of the First International on September 17, 1871-the London Conference
On this day 154 years ago, on September 17, 1871 (August 3, 1871 lunar calendar), an important meeting of the First International, the London Conference. The failure of the Paris Commune in 1871 put the First International in a difficult position, revealing the various speculators who had infiltrated the International. Bakunin and his cabal, believing that the time had come, couldn't wait to participate in the "chorus" of the international bourgeoisie and reactionaries slandering the Paris Commune against the First International. Bakunin himself publicly slandered the Commune for "causing great damage to the revolutionary cause" and was a "criminal act." Slandering the International "The General Committee did not support the Paris Movement" and so on. They used the Jura branch in Switzerland as the base of opposition to the International, and recruited disciples in Spain, Italy, Belgium and other countries, splitting the local International branch, making the International even more difficult due to internal divisions. They also called for the immediate convening of an extraordinary congress of the International, conspiring to cooperate with the bourgeoisie to subvert the International from the inside and outside. Faced with this difficult situation, in order to sum up the experience and lessons of the Paris Commune revolution and fight back against the attack of the Bakunin clique, the General Council, under the leadership of Marx and Engels, held a secret conference of the International in London on September 17, 1871. There were 23 delegates present, most of whom were supporters of Marx. Bakunin was afraid to attend because he was afraid of being exposed in person. Three resolutions were made at the meeting. These three resolutions hit the heart of the Bakunin clique. In the resolution on organizational issues, uniform regulations were made on the names of international organizations at all levels, the sectarian names of all organizations were abolished, and all sectarian activities were strictly prohibited. This was also a heavy blow to the sectarian separatist activities of the Bakunin clique. The Bakunin clique suffered a complete defeat at the secret congress in London. The meeting ended on September 23.
