Thirty-five years ago today, on November 13, 1990 (September 27, 1990 lunar calendar), Tangshan was awarded the United Nations "Habitat Honor Award". On November 13, 1990, the Tangshan Municipal People's Government of our country received the "Habitat Honor Award" issued by the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements (Habitat) for its outstanding achievements in earthquake relief, reconstruction of Tangshan City and solving the problem of millions of people's living. At the award ceremony, Mao Rui, representative of the United Nations Development Programme Office in Beijing, presented the award to Chen Liyou, mayor of Tangshan City, on behalf of Dr. Tomachandran, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the United People's Habitat Center. He said: "The award to the Tangshan municipal government is to recognize the huge construction and outstanding achievements of Tangshan after the 1976 earthquake, which is an outstanding example of solving housing, infrastructure and service problems with science and enthusiasm. The experience of Tangshan shows that the active participation of the people has played an important role in improving human living conditions after the disaster." At the award ceremony, Tangshan mayor Chen Liyou said: "Today Tangshan tells people not just a story of destruction and rise, but a history of entrepreneurship in a new era." The honorary award of the United People's Center is an international award for outstanding contributions to improving human living conditions. In 1990, there were six winners, which were awarded in France, the United Kingdom, Colombia, Tanzania, Thailand and China. Tangshan is the first city in our country to participate in this international selection and win awards. In the selection, internationally renowned urban construction experts praised the construction of Tangshan and believed that Tangshan provided the construction experience that the international community can emulate.
