121 years ago today, July 4, 1904 (May 21, 1904 in the lunar calendar), the last imperial examination in my country's history. In the early morning of July 4, 1904, 273 tribute soldiers selected in the examination of the Ministry of Rites entered the Hall of Baohe through the middle left gate. They went through various ceremonial etiquette such as roll call, random scroll, praise, and salute, and prepared to participate in the palace examination, which was nominally presided over by the emperor. This is the last level of the triennial national imperial examination. The tributes were re-ranked based on the results of this examination. The top three generals in the first class were awarded Jinshi and the third class, while the second class and the third class were awarded Jinshi origin and the same Jinshi origin respectively. At 10 a.m., the test questions were issued. They were questions on current affairs in the name of the emperor. The question was about five to six hundred words long. The tribute soldiers immediately began to write countermeasure papers, expressing their opinions and suggestions on the issues raised by the emperor. There is no limit to the length of the countermeasure text. The general rule is 2000 words. It is stipulated that the words must be in regular style and the text must be in line. It is neat and orderly, and cannot be neglected. Sunset is the time limit for submitting papers. The top three winners in this court examination were: No. 1 champion Liu Chunlin, No. 1 runner-up Zhu Ruzhen, and flower hunter Yanliu. Also participating in this palace examination were Tan Yan (Outer Gate Liqi), Tang Hualong, Pu Dianjun, Shen Junru, etc. The Qing court announced the abolition of the imperial examination the following year, so the Jiachen Examination became the last imperial examination in China's history.
