Ninety-five years ago today, on October 26, 1930 (September 5, 1930), the Wushe Uprising in Taiwan failed. Japanese troops shelled the mountain tribes of Wushe. On October 26, 1930, 1,500 people from the Gaoshan ethnic group in Wushe, Taiwan, staged an anti-Japanese uprising. On the night of the 26th, 280 households in 6 Gaoshan ethnic villages in the Wushe area, led by their leader, Mona-Rhodaao, attacked 2 Japanese police stations, destroyed telephones, and seized guns and ammunition. The next morning, they stormed the joint sports field of Wushe Elementary School and Public School. They annihilated all the Japanese who participated in the sports meeting, and then attacked other Japanese police stations, surrendering 180 guns and 23,037 rounds of ammunition. Three days after the Takayama people occupied the whole area of Wushe, more than 600 people were killed due to the attack of the Taichung Japanese garrison and retreated into the mountains. The Japanese dispatched planes to the valley to release poison gas. The Takayama insurgents committed suicide en masse after running out of ammunition. Mona-Rhoda Ao committed suicide in a rock cave.
