In early September, Pyongyang was in dire straits and the war was about to spread to China. Under the pressure of domestic public opinion, Li Hongzhang had to send more troops to North Korea. On September 17, when Navy Admiral Ding Ruchang was leading the Beiyang Fleet to complete the escort mission and prepare to return to Lushun, he encountered the Japanese fleet on the Yellow Sea of Dadonggou at the Yalu River mouth, and the two sides engaged in a fierce battle. Deng Shichang is from Panyu County, Guangdong Province. In his childhood, he witnessed with his own eyes the cruelty of foreign invaders, deeply felt the suffering of the Chinese nation, and began to sprout patriotic thoughts. At the age of 14, he was admitted to Fuzhou Shipbuilding School with excellent results. After graduation, he served as the commander of ships such as "Haidongyun","Zhenwei","Zhenbei", and "Yangwei". In 1879, he was transferred to the Beiyang Fleet and served as the commander of ships such as "Zhiyuan". Deng Shichang was "diligent in administering affairs" and "profound in Western learning." He always loved his soldiers and lived a simple life. As a result, he was deeply loved by his subordinates. He was a rare general in the China navy at that time. In the end, the "Zhiyuan" was hit by a torpedo fired by the "Yoshino", and Deng Shichang and more than 200 officers and soldiers on board all died heroically. At the same time as the cruiser Zhiyuan was being tested, patriotic officers and soldiers from other warships also fought bravely and attacked the Japanese ship. The Japanese ship suffered heavy casualties. Warships such as Matsushima, Yoshino, Hirei, Akagi, Fuso, Nishikyo Maru were severely injured, killing hundreds of Japanese invaders. Although China suffered a lot in this naval battle and four warships were sunk, the two main ships,"Zhenyuan" and "Dingyuan", were still intact and could still fight after being repaired.
