On this day 47 years ago, on December 25, 1978 (November 26, 1978 lunar calendar), the Vietnam War of Aggression against Cambodia broke out. On December 25, 1978, Vietnam launched a war of aggression against its neighbor Democratic Kampuchea. In May 1975, after the liberation of South Vietnam and the reunification of the North and South in July 1976, the regional hegemonic ambitions of the Le Duan bloc expanded sharply. On June 4, 1975, the Vietnamese army occupied the Cambodian island of Wai. Since 1977, there have been continuous conflicts on the Vietnam-Cambodia border. In September and December of the same year, the Vietnamese army invaded Cambodia twice. In June 1978, Vietnam joined the Mutual Economic Council. In early November, the Vietnam-Soviet Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation was signed. The Soviet Union's military assistance to Vietnam increased rapidly. On December 25, Vietnam dispatched more than 10 divisions and more than 200,000 regular troops, divided into seven routes, and launched a large-scale armed invasion of Democratic Kampuchea. On January 7, 1979, it occupied Phnom Penh and pieced together the pro-Vietnamese regime led by Han Sanglin. Vietnam's aggression was strongly condemned by the international community, especially ASEAN countries.
