On June 30, 1958, the Beijing Ming Tombs Reservoir project was completely completed. The flood blocking dam that locks Mangshan and Hanbao Mountains shows a majestic appearance. The five words "Ming Tombs Reservoir" proposed by Chairman Mao were enlarged 150 times by the stonemons and inlaid with white marble on the chest of the dam. The asphalt road at the top of the dam has been opened to traffic. The street lights beside the road are bright at night. The generator that employees of Shanghai Huasheng Electric Factory rushed to make has been installed and is waiting to store flood and generate electricity. The entire 11.5-kilometer-long highway around the lake has been completed. Xiaogu Mountain, where a pavilion in the center of the lake is being built, has been raised to the surface of the future. This reservoir, which can hold more than 80 million cubic meters of water, was built entirely with voluntary labor. In the 160 days and nights since the construction started on January 21, 400,000 people have worked on the construction site, working a total of more than 8.7 million working days. Among them are workers, farmers, PLA officers and soldiers, government officials, school teachers and students, commercial workers, literary and artistic workers, religious believers and street residents. They overcame the severe cold of winter, the sandstorms of spring and the heat of summer, and finally completed all the projects before the flood arrived. During the construction of the reservoir, Chairman Mao Zedong and other members and alternate members of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, heads of provincial and municipal committees, central departments and Beijing City, marshals and generals of the China People's Liberation Army, and heads of democratic parties and people's organizations all came to the construction site to participate in labor as ordinary workers. The builders of the Ming Tombs Reservoir are very grateful to the international friends who care about the construction of the reservoir. In more than five months, ambassadors and embassy staff from many countries stationed in our country, experts from various countries in Beijing and foreign guests visiting our country also went to the construction site to participate in voluntary labor. The Ming Tombs Reservoir was inaugurated on July 1. A total of 150,000 reservoir builders and nearby farmers held a grand rally at the construction site to celebrate the successful completion of all the reservoir projects.
