Breaking-News >> TodayHistory December 31, 2006 serial bombings in Bangkok
On December 31, 2006 (November 12, 2006 in the lunar calendar), a series of bombings in Bangkok. The 2006 New Year's Eve bombings in Bangkok took place in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, between the night of New Year's Eve in 2006 and the New Year's Eve midnight in 2007 (December 31, 2006 to January 1, 2007); at that time, it was the New Year's Eve celebration of the citizens. The first four explosions took place in different corners of Bangkok at around 6 pm local time (1800 UTC 7, 1100GMT). A total of 8 different places in the urban area exploded that night; it was not until the next day (New Year's Day 2007) that at least 3 people were confirmed dead and 38 injured (including foreigners and locals). The local government issued a directive shortly after the bombing to cancel all official public celebrations and countdown activities, including the CentralWorld mall in the city center and the open space of Wangjia Square near the Grand Palace. So far, only one person has been arrested on suspicion of possession of explosive dangerous materials; no group or individual has been publicly responsible for the incident. In addition, the Thai Rak Thai Party and its leader Thaksin Shinawatra have strongly denied any previous involvement in the incident. Chuwitt Kamolvisit, the owner of Thailand's largest brothel (or massage parlor) and a prominent political figure, said he would pay Bt1 million to those who knew about the incident or knew the mastermind behind it as a reward or bonus. It is worth noting that at the scene of three of the bombings, the words "IRK" written in bold pen were found. "IRK" actually refers to the Afghan terrorist guerrilla forces.
