As of September 1994, the doctoral and master's degrees trained by graduate schools accounted for 53% and 42% of the national graduate students respectively, and the postgraduate students accounted for 44% of the national graduate students, of which doctoral students accounted for 53.4% of the national total. The establishment of graduate schools has led to the improvement of the overall level of the school."Building the school into two centers of teaching and scientific research" has been implemented in institutions of higher learning that have established graduate schools. The establishment of graduate schools has also promoted the discipline construction of these institutions of higher learning. Among the 416 key disciplines in universities across the country, there are 33 graduate schools in total, accounting for 71.9%. In these schools, not only have some disciplines reached international advanced levels, but also emerging and cross-disciplines have been established and developed. Application for degrees and postgraduate degrees, professional degrees, the cultivation of applied talents, and broadening the subject areas for cultivating graduate students were all first proposed, practiced and promoted by graduate schools.
