Eighty years ago today, on June 23, 1945 (May 14, 1945, the inventor of the submarine, Simon Lake, passed away. On June 23, 1945, Simon Lake, the inventor of the modern submarine, died in Bridge Harbor, Connecticut, USA at the age of 78. In 1894, Lake provided drawings for the first submarine he designed to the U.S. Navy, but they were rejected. So he went abroad with his invention. After working in the Soviet Union for several years, he returned to Bridge Harbor and founded the Lake Torpedo Boat Company. During the war, the company built more than 100 submarines, 55 of which were built for the United States. The German U-boats that blew up Allied ships during the Great War were built based on Lake's invention. Although the vast majority of Lake's submarines are warships, one of his main purposes in building ships is rescue and doing business at sea. In the 1930s, he worked hard to retrieve a ship carrying $4.8 million worth of gold that sank to the bottom of the Hudson River in 1780. But his fate was bad, which consumed a lot of his wealth.
