On August 1, 2010 (June 21, 2010), the fifth Beidou navigation satellite was successfully launched. At 5:30 am on August 1, 2010, our country used the "Long March 3A" carrier rocket at the Xichang Satellite Launch Center to successfully send the fifth Beidou navigation satellite into the scheduled transfer orbit of space. This is a tilted geosynchronous orbit satellite and the third Beidou navigation system networking satellite launched by our country this year. The person in charge of the special project management office of China Satellite Navigation System introduced that the Beidou Satellite Navigation System (COMPASS, Chinese transliteration name BeiDou), as a global satellite navigation system developed and operated independently in our country, is an important spatial information infrastructure being built by the country and can be widely used in various fields of economy and society. The system can provide high-precision and high-reliability positioning, navigation and timing services, and has the characteristics of combining navigation and communication services. Through 19 years of development, it has been applied in many fields such as surveying and mapping, fishing, transportation, telecommunications, water conservancy, forest fire prevention, disaster reduction and disaster relief and national security. Especially in Wenchuan, Sichuan and Yushu, Qinghai earthquake relief has played a very important role. According to the "three-step" development strategy, the Beidou satellite navigation system will have regional service capabilities in the Asia-Pacific region by 2012, and a large-scale aerospace system covering the world composed of more than 30 satellites, ground segments and various user end points will be built around 2020. The Beidou satellite navigation system is technically complex and large-scale. Its construction and application will realize the historical transformation of our country's aerospace from single-satellite development to batch production, from single-satellite insurance to network insurance, from satellite-centered to system-centered, from industry-oriented users to mass users, and start a new journey of our country's aerospace industry.
