Thirty-four years ago today, on May 21, 1991 (April 8, 1991), the Mengistu regime in Ethiopia collapsed. On May 21, 1991, Ethiopian President Mengistu was forced to resign and fled Zimbabwe to seek political asylum. The armed opposition group Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) took the opportunity to launch a fierce attack on the capital area, and the government army was quickly defeated. On the 26th, the FDC captured Ethiopia's largest military airport, about 50 kilometers southeast of the capital Addis Ababa, and cut off the last land route to the capital.
