Breaking-News >> TodayHistory The London Convention on the Prohibition of Disposal of Nuclear Waste at Sea
Thirty-two years ago today, on November 12th, 1993 (September 29th, 1993 in the lunar calendar), the members of the London Convention banned the dumping of nuclear waste at sea. On November 12th, 1993, representatives of 37 member countries of the London Convention voted in London in favor of a total ban on the dumping of nuclear waste at sea. The London Convention, signed by 71 countries, was adopted in 1972 to prevent the dumping of waste at sea and protect the global marine environment. The meeting of the member countries of the London Convention will be held here in the headquarters building of the United Nations International Maritime Organization from November 8th. Since the 1983 London Convention Conference adopted a temporary treaty banning the dumping of waste at sea, most parts of the world have stopped dumping waste into the sea. However, the 10-year treaty is about to expire. In particular, three weeks ago, Russia dumped 900 tons of low-concentration radioactive waste near the Sea of Japan, which attracted the attention of all parties. Therefore, the main topic of this conference is the prevention of dumping and incineration of waste at sea. In the vote, 37 countries voted for a total ban on the dumping of nuclear waste at sea. This total dumping ban resolution will take effect 100 days after its formal adoption, but it is not legally binding on the dissenting members of the London Convention, but they are bound by the London Convention adopted in 1972.
