On June 2, 1921, Tsinghua Professor Zhao Yuanren and Yang Buwei held a new marriage
Today, 104 years ago, on June 2, 1921 (April 26, 1921 in the lunar calendar), Tsinghua professor Zhao Yuanren and Yang Buwei got married in a new style. On June 2, 1921, Zhao Yuanren and Yang Buwei got married in a new style. Zhao Yang met in September, 1920. Zhao was appointed as a professor at Tsinghua University with a considerable salary. Yang was appointed as the president of Senren Hospital with a high income. According to the old marriage tradition, they could make their marriage very decent, but they kept it simple except renting a house. In addition to choosing two people to witness the marriage, relatives and friends don't invite or accept gifts. Zhao issued a marriage notice: "Dr. Zhao Yuanren and Ms. Yang Buwei respectfully submitted this temporary notice to friends and relatives, telling you that before this letter arrived, they had already married independently in Beijing at the average solar standard of 120 degrees east longitude on June 1, the 10th year of the Republic of China. Let me tell you, the witnesses of their marriage: Dr. Hu Shizhi, female doctor Zhu Zheng. Let me tell you that, because we want to break the vulgar and complicated habits of inaction in the old and new worlds recently, we will not accept congratulatory gifts except for the following two exceptions. Exception 1, abstract kindness, such as letters, poems, or music, etc., is an intangible congratulatory gift created by the giver himself. Exception 2, or you can donate to the Chinese Science Society in your own name... ". When Yang Buwei was 32 years old, he married Mr. Zhao Yuanren, a famous linguist, which was one of the happiest marriages in modern times. Zhao Yuanren, courtesy name Xuanzhong, was originally from Wujin, Jiangsu (now Changzhou). A descendant of Zhao Yi (Oubei), a famous poet in Qing Dynasty. Born in Tianjin in the 18th year of Guangxu (1892). Zhao Yuanren is a pioneer of modern Chinese linguistics, known as "the father of modern Chinese linguistics", a pioneer of modern Chinese musicology and one of the founders of China Science Society. Zhao Yuanren's representative works in linguistics include: Study of Modern Wu Dialect, Grammar of Chinese Dialect, Textbook of Mandarin Phonograph, etc. Zhao Yuanren's masterpieces in music include: Teach Me How to Not Miss Her, Hai Yun, Xiamen University School Song, etc. Zhao Yuanren's representative works translated include Alice in Wonderland, etc. He is a famous modern scholar, linguist and musician. He successively taught at Cornell University, Harvard University, Tsinghua University in China, Institute of History and Linguistics of Academia Sinica, University of Hawaii, Yale University, Harvard University, and University of Michigan. Later, he taught at the University of California, Berkeley (UCBerkeley) for a long time (1947-1963) and retired in Berkeley. Zhao Yuanren successively received honorary doctorates from Princeton University (1946), University of California (1962), and Ohio State University (1970), "Professor Research Lecturer" at the University of California (1967), and Honorary Professor at Peking University, China (1981). Zhao Yuanren is knowledgeable, both a mathematician and a physicist, and has certain attainments in philosophy. However, he is mainly known as a famous linguist. He taught Tsinghua from 1920 to retiring from the University of California in 1972, and engaged in education for 52 years. Famous Chinese linguists Wang Li, Zhu Dexi, Lu Shuxiang, etc. are all his students, who "have trained a huge team for the research of Chinese linguistics", which can be described as peaches and plums all over the world. On the evening of September 18th, 1920, it was estimated that the gate of Beijing had been closed, and Zhao Yuanren couldn't go back to tsinghua campus, stayed at a relative's house, and planned to talk with his uncle about the dissolution of the engagement. At my cousin's home, Zhao Yuanren met Yang Buwei, a female doctor at Senren Obstetrics Hospital. Yang Buwei, formerly known as Lanxian, whose nickname is Chuandi, was born in Shitai County, Chizhou, Anhui Province. She was born in Huapailou, Nanjing on November 25th, 1889. She was born in a large family with 100 people and 128 houses. His grandfather is Yang Renshan, founder of the Chinese Buddhist Association. When she was studying in Nanjing Luning School, her grandfather gave her the scientific name Yunqing. As for the name "Bu Wei", it was given to her by her classmate and good friend Lin Guanhong. When she was a teenager, Lin Guanhong saw her extraordinary and said to her, "You will be great in the future. Let's be called Bu Wei." She refused to accept it. Later, Lin Guanhong died of an infectious disease. In memory of Guanhong, she officially renamed Yunqing "Bu Wei". Yang Buwei later went to Japan to study medicine at official expenses. In Japan, many things humiliated her. After Japan put forward the "Article 21", all Chinese students studying abroad walked out of class, while the Japanese side made things difficult in every way, such as forcibly repeating grades, not issuing diplomas and so on. Yang Buwei, who was just graduating, was so angry that he didn't even get his diploma or attend the graduation ceremony, so he returned to China. In May 1919, Yang Buwei received a letter from her father asking her to return to China to open a hospital in Beijing. When she arrived in Beijing, her father had died of illness. She and her friends opened a Senren Hospital in Rongxian Hutong, Xicheng, with only obstetrics and gynecology and pediatrics. One is Li Guanzhong and the other is Yang Buwei. They jointly opened a "Senren Hospital" in Rongxian Hutong. Lin Guanhong, their former medical classmates, died early. The surnames of these three people were Kibe and Miki Chengsen. One of them died, and only two of them remained, so they were called "Ren", which is the origin of the name "Senren Hospital". But her professional doctor didn't do it for long, because she met Zhao Yuanren. Zhao Yuanren's love with Yang Buwei began one night in September, 1920. Zhao Yuanren came out of the Mandarin Unification Association. Because it was too late, Xizhimen Gate was closed and he couldn't go back to Tsinghua, so he went to his cousin Pang Dunmin's house to spend the night. On that day, my cousin's house happened to have guests, all of whom were friends who had returned from studying in Japan. Two of them were female doctors Yang Buwei and Li Guanzhong from Senren Obstetrics Hospital. The next day, the two female doctors invited Pang Dunmin and his wife to Central Park for dinner, and Zhao Yuanren, a guest of Pang's family, should also be invited as a guest. After dinner, everyone went to Senren Hospital in Yang Buwei. They ate French snacks, American chocolate candy, Zhao Yuanren sang American songs, and my cousin and sister-in-law sang Kunqu Opera. Since then, Zhao Yuanren has become a frequent visitor to Senren Hospital. Yang Buwei said in her autobiography that she wanted to fulfill the combination of Zhao Yuanren and Li Guanzhong, but she tried to avoid it as much as possible, but it was Zhao Yuanren and Yang Buwei who finally fulfilled it. Together, they went to Central Park first and had dinner together. Zhao said in his diary that day: "Dr. Yang is 100% open". "Yang Buwei also has a fiance arranged by his family, and the engagement was cancelled by her. It can be seen that Zhao Yuanren is very sympathetic and appreciative to Dr. Yang Buwei for breaking the old etiquette and canceling the engagement arranged by his family." At this time, Zhao Yuanren already felt love for Yang Buwei. Therefore, the dissolution of the arranged marriage was stepped up. It was not until late May 1921 that the woman Chen family agreed to dissolve the "engagement contract", but Zhao Yuanren was required to provide Ms. Chen with a "tuition fee" of 2,000 yuan (which sounds better than the youth loss fee). Zhao Yuanren wrote in his diary: "I was engaged to this girl for more than ten years, and finally I was free." On May 25th, 1921, Zhao Yuanren and Yang Buwei began to prepare for marriage, drafting and printing the marriage notice; Self-made and handwritten marriage certificate, with a 40-cent stamp; Take a number of selfies in Central Park, and choose one in the Motto Pavilion as a wedding photo; I rented No.49 Xiaoyabao Hutong, Dongcheng, Beijing as a wedding house. It has the first floor and the bottom floor. The room is very comfortable and there is a roof garden. On May 31st, after Zhao Yuanren and Yang Buwei properly decorated the house, they invited Hu Shi and female doctor Zhu Zheng to have dinner in the living room that night. After dinner, take out the marriage certificate and ask two friends to sign it as marriage witnesses. In order to legalize it, a stamp duty of 40 cents was posted. Zhao Yuanren recalled: In the notice we sent to relatives and friends, we said that when we received this news, we had been married at the average solar standard time of 120 degrees east longitude at 3 o'clock on June 1, 1921. Except for two exceptions, congratulatory gifts are absolutely not accepted. The first exception is letters, poems, or music scores, etc., and the second exception is donations to China Science Society. The next day, Beijing Morning Post published a special title "New Marriage of New People". After marriage, Yang Buwei gave up his position as hospital director and gynecology director, and became a good wife of her husband and children. The two live in harmony, and a loving couple has been together for more than 60 years.
