124 years ago today, September 5, 1901 (July 23, 1901 in the lunar calendar), U.S. President McKinley was assassinated. McKinley assassinated President McKinley died before dawn on September 15 at a friend's home in Buffalo. He was the third president of the United States to be assassinated. The other two were Abraham Lincoln, who was assassinated in 1865, and James A. Garfield, who was assassinated in 1881. President McKinley was shot on September 5 while holding a reception at the Music Hall of the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo. The assassin Leon Jorgosh, 28, an anarchist, was immediately arrested. He pleaded guilty the next day. September 14th. William McKinley said the words of his favorite hymn in a faint voice: "God, I'm getting closer to you." He then fell into a coma and died on September 15 in Buffalo, New York. A few hours later, Vice President Theodore Roosevelt gave up his mountaineering trip and hurried back from the distant Adirondacks on horseback and then by train to be sworn in as the 24th President of the United States. President Roosevelt is 42 years old. He was the governor of New York and a graduate student at Harvard University. He was sworn in at the library of his close friend Ainslie Wilcox. Wilcox lived just a mile away from the house where McKinley died a little over 10 hours earlier. Before the inauguration ceremony, Roosevelt came to the room where the body of the late president was still located. He stared at the fallen leader, bowed his head and observed a few minutes of silence, and then left the room. His body trembled and tears welled up in his eyes. As he took the presidential oath, Roosevelt said solemnly: "I would say that my goal is to continue to implement to the letter President McKinley's policy of peace, prosperity, and preservation of the dignity of the motherland."
