On June 18, 1965, the Soviet astronaut Alexei Leonov became the first spacecraft to walk in space. Three months later, the U.S. Space Agency, accused by President Johnson of "falling behind someone else's ass," rushed to send Edward-H-Whit into space, becoming the first American to go into space. On June 3, 1965, he left the Gemini 4 spacecraft and floated the world's record for 21 minutes in space.
