Comrade Shui Hua, formerly known as Zhang Shuihua, joined the left-wing drama activities in 1931. In 1934, he was a member of the Nanjing Branch of the Left-wing Drama League. After the July 7th Incident, he joined the Shanghai Salvation Drama Team 4 and actively participated in the anti-Japanese propaganda and performance activities. In 1940, he came to Yan'an and worked as a director in the Luyi Experimental Theater Troupe. In 1942, he joined the Communist Party of China. In 1944, he participated in the creation of the new opera "White-haired Girl". In 1949, he served as the head of the Northeast Luyi Experimental Theater Troupe; in 1950, he served as a director at the Northeast Film Studio and co-directed "The White-Haired Girl", which aroused strong repercussions at home and abroad. He won the Honorary Award at the Karlovy Varley International Film Festival and the first prize for outstanding films from 1949 to 1955 by the Ministry of Culture of China. Transferred to the Beijing Film Studio, he shot a series of excellent films, such as "Lin Family Shop", "Revolutionary Family", "Eternal Life in Fire", "Wounded Death", etc., and won many awards.
