Thirty-six years ago today, on December 5, 1989 (November 8, 1989 lunar calendar), Chinese painter Li Keran passed away. At 10:50 am on December 5, 1989, Mr. Li Keran suffered a heart attack. Chinese painter Li Keran died suddenly in his apartment in Beijing at the age of 82. At that time, he was in the studio, discussing with four comrades from the Ministry of Culture how to carry forward the art of Chinese painting. As soon as the idea was discussed, he suddenly turned his head and leaned back on the back of the sofa, never lifting it up again. From the age of 13, Li Keran entered the art hall, he has always been diligent, and his attainments have deepened, eventually becoming a generation of masters. He named his studio "Shi Niutang" and often encouraged himself with the spirit of old cattle. He once inscribed on the painting "Five Ox": "Ox is also, with infinite strength, bowing down to his son without being strong. He is exhausted all his life, and he takes credit for doing things to others..." Many of his painting friends say this can also be seen as a portrayal of Mr. Li Keran himself. As an outstanding art educator, Li Keran has cultivated batch after batch of outstanding art talents over the decades. His artistic accomplishment, creative ideas, and moral sentiments have all influenced a large number of artists. As a highly respected art master, he served as vice chairperson of the China Artists Association and president of the Chinese Painting Research Institute for many years before his death. He was also a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference for several consecutive terms. In his later years, despite suffering from serious heart disease, his dedication to art always kept beating tenaciously. He still continues to receive people who come to ask for advice, still creates masterpieces praising the great mountains and rivers, and still visits art exhibitions on crutches... Li Keran (1907-1989), born in Xuzhou, Jiangsu on March 26, 1907, was born in a poor family. He studied painting with money and food as a child. He entered the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts in 1923 and returned to his hometown to teach after graduation. In 1929, he was admitted to the research class of the West Lake Academy of Art. He studied oil painting and was instructed by Lin Fengmian. Later, he was forced to drop out of school due to his progressive activities. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, he engaged in life-saving propaganda work. In 1943, he taught at the National Academy of Art, and in 1946, he taught at the Peking Academy of Art, and studied under Qi Baishi and Huang Binhong. He is good at landscapes, figures and cattle. His landscapes were influenced by Zhu Da and Dong Qichang in his early years, and his paintings were simple and light. From the mid-1950s to the early 1960s, he went to Jiangsu and Zhejiang, Huangshan, Sichuan, Guangdong, Guangxi and the former Democratic Germany to sketch and create directly on the scenery, and embarked on the road of transforming landscape painting. His works are mostly based on famous mountains and rivers in Jiangnan and Bashu. In terms of expression techniques, he changed the traditional linear brush and ink structure to a mass brush and ink structure, which is longer than ink accumulation, repeated accumulation and dyeing, thick and thick; he also introduced the light in Western paintings into landscape paintings, creating a backlight effect that depicted the mountains and forests in the morning and evening, making the works have a hazy and confused, flowing light wandering characteristics, and is very personalized. His characters are mostly written about farmers, fishermen, Zhong Xu, ladies, shepherds, and scholars, with freehand brushwork, concise brushwork, and a sense of humor and life interest. Li Keran has also been engaged in Chinese painting education for a long time.
