On this day 61 years ago, on October 24, 1964 (September 19, 1964 lunar calendar), Kaunda was elected as the first president of independent Zambia. Kenneth David Kaunda, President of the Republic of Zambia, was born on April 28, 1924 in Chinsali County, Northern Province of Zambia. He graduated from the Monali Secondary School in Lusaka City and worked as a teacher and principal of the secondary school. He has been involved in the struggle against colonial rule and for national independence since his youth. In 1946, he participated in the establishment of the African National Congress of Northern Rhodesia (formerly known as Zambia). He served as the organizing secretary and the general secretary of the party from 1953 to 1958. He quit the party in October 1958 and formed the African National Congress of Zambia as the chairperson. After the party was banned in March 1959, it was exiled by the colonial authorities and released in November of the same year. Chairperson of the United National Independence Party from January 1960 until now. Elected as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Northern Rhodesia in October 1962. Minister of Local Government and Social Welfare in the Union Government in December of the same year. Prime Minister of the "Self-Government" of Northern Rhodesia in January 1964. After Zambia became independent on October 24, 1964, he served as the first president and has since been re-elected in successive general elections. President Kaunda is committed to the unity and unity of Africa and is the current Chairperson of the Organization of African Unity and the President of the Southern African Front Countries. Previously, he served as the 7th Chairperson of the Organization of African Unity in 1970 and the Chairperson of the Non-Aligned Movement from 1970 to 1973.
