Schleicher was born in Brandenburg, the son of a Prussian official and the daughter of a ship owner. After graduating from military academy, he joined the German army in 1900 as a second lieutenant. During World War I, his superior was William Groener. In the 1920s, Schleicher rose to the top of the Wehrmacht and became an important intermediary between the military and civilian government.
