Eighty-four years ago today, on November 5, 1941 (September 17, 1941 lunar calendar), the Soviet army carried out the Battle of Rostov in the Soviet-German War. During the Soviet-German war in World War II, the German Army Group South, after occupying the southwest of Donbass, attempted to siege the Soviet Rostov Group with one force and open the door to the Caucasus. The Soviet Southern Front and the Independent 56th Army (incorporated into the Southern Front during the campaign) were ordered to strengthen the defense of the Rostov area and turned to a counter-offensive in due course. On November 5, 1941, the German Army Group South launched an attack on the Soviet Southern Front north of Rostov and was repelled. On the 6th and 7th, the Soviet army launched a counter-attack, but failed. On the 11th, the Germans occupied the area north of Rostov. On the 17th, the Soviets launched an assault counterattack behind the side of the German 1st Panzer Army. The main direction of the assault was Veliklepinskaya, with Dmitrievka, Tiakovo and Zedlevka as auxiliary assault directions. On the same day, the Germans also launched an attack on Rostov from north to south, and captured the city on the 21st. The Soviet assault group progressed smoothly and reached the Tuzlov River northwest of Rostov on the 26th, threatening the German side. The next day, the Soviets attacked the German forces occupying Rostov from the northwest and south, forcing the Germans to withdraw. The Soviets recaptured the city on the 29th and pursued the fleeing enemy with victory. On December 2, the Soviet army pursued the Germans to the line of the Mius River and was blocked by the Germans. The battle ended. In this battle, the Soviets stabilized the situation on the southern flank of the Soviet-German battlefield, achieved their first victory since the start of the war, and smashed the German attempt to break into the Caucasus. During the battle, the Soviets killed and wounded more than 20,000 Germans, destroyed and captured 275 German tanks and 470 artillery pieces, forcing the Germans to withdraw 60 to 80 kilometers west.
