127 years ago today, on June 1, 1898 (April 13, 1898 lunar calendar), a reformist women's group founded the Chinese Women's Society Book School. On June 1, 1898, the reformist women's group, the Women's Society, founded the Chinese Women's Society Book School in Guishu, South of Shanghai, which was the first self-run girls' school in modern China. It offered four courses: Chinese, Western, medicine, and female red. It was suspended around the Mid-Autumn Festival in 1900. The Women's Society was established at the turn of the summer and autumn in 1897, with Li Run (Tan Si's wife) and Huang Jinyu (Kang Guangren's wife) as the initiating directors. The Women's Society also founded the first women's newspaper in modern China, "Women's Journal", which advocated women's studies and opposed foot binding.
