Twenty-seven years ago today, on August 4, 1998 (June 13, 1998 in the lunar calendar), the Cheung Kong Scholars Award Scheme was fully launched. On August 4, 1998, the "Cheung Kong Scholars Award Scheme" established by the Ministry of Education and Hong Kong patriotic industrialist Mr. Li Ka-shing and his company, Cheung Kong Infrastructure (Group) Co., Ltd. to raise funds was fully launched. The contents of the "Cheung Kong Scholars Award Scheme" include the establishment of a system of distinguished professors and the establishment of the "Yangtze River Scholars Achievement Award". According to the implementation measures formulated by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Education will set up 300 to 500 distinguished professor positions in national key construction disciplines in institutions of higher learning across the country within 3 to 5 years. The disciplines in which the distinguished professor positions are set must be of great significance to the economic and social development of our country, and the national key construction disciplines that have reached or are most likely to reach the international advanced level academically or emerging disciplines with strong teaching and research strength, are at the forefront of international discipline development, and are expected to achieve major breakthroughs. The responsibilities of the distinguished professor position are: to teach the core courses of the discipline; to preside over the research of major national scientific research projects; to lead the construction of the academic echelon of the discipline; to lead the discipline to catch up with or maintain the international advanced level in its cutting-edge fields. Colleges and universities that have been approved to set up distinguished professorships openly recruit young and middle-aged outstanding talents with deep academic attainments, great development potential and the ability to lead their own disciplines at home and abroad. Those who have been appointed to the distinguished professorships enjoy an annual post allowance of RMB 100,000 during the term of employment; at the same time, they enjoy the salary, insurance, benefits and other benefits provided by the school in accordance with relevant national regulations. Distinguished professors who have made significant achievements and made significant contributions during their tenure will be given heavy awards. Mr. Li Ka-shing invested HK $10 million to establish the "Yangtze River Scholar Achievement Award", which will be awarded once a year.
