On December 25, 1948, the Dutch raided Indonesia
On this day, 77 years ago, on December 25, 1948 (November 25, 1948 in the lunar calendar), the Netherlands raided Indonesia. Dutch anti-insurgent forces take "security operation" near Jakarta. On December 25, 1948, the Dutch army ignored the United Nations ceasefire regulations and captured the last fortress of the Republic of India and Pakistan. The fall of the city of Gulifen ended the Dutch army's week-long invasion of Java. This aggression began with airborne troops attacking the capital Jakarta on the 18th. The Dutch army used siege tactics to control the new government and detained President Sukarno and other leaders of the Republic. The Dutch government, which bears a grudge against Indonesian independence and is angry at what it claims to be terrorist attacks instigated by Indonesian leaders, wants to re-establish a new republic government on Java that is sympathetic to the Netherlands. The UN Security Council demanded that Dutch officials stop fighting and release Sukarno and other leaders. The Dutch Government has now released most of the detainees, but it seems unlikely that they will fully comply with the Council's instructions until they install new leaders in Java.
