On December 22, 1971 (the fifth day of the winter lunar month), the Republic of Bangladesh was established. On December 22, 1971, Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, was officially established. Pakistan became independent on August 14, 1947, and Bangladesh, as East Pakistan, is part of it. Later, Bangladesh launched a movement calling for autonomy and independence. On April 17, 1971, the Interim Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh was announced and elected Mujibur Rahman, who was then imprisoned in West Pakistan, as president. In November of the same year, the third India-Pakistan War broke out. Before the Indian army captured Dhaka in December, the interim government mainly operated in West Bengal, India. It moved to Dhaka on December 22, marking the official establishment of the Republic of Bangladesh. On January 7, 1972, Rahman was released and returned to Bangladesh. On January 11, as president, he announced the establishment of a representative democracy and appointed himself as prime minister. Joined the United Nations in September 1974.
