Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On May 29, 1904, the China Red Cross Society was established
121 years ago today, on May 29, 1904 (April 15, 1904 lunar calendar), the Chinese International Committee of the Red Cross was established. The International Committee of the Red Cross is a voluntary, international ambulance and relief organization. It was originally engaged in wartime ambulance work, and later developed into a multi-faceted social activity including natural disaster relief, social relief, social welfare, blood transfusion, first aid and nursing work in peacetime. In August 1864, an international conference held in Geneva, initiated by Switzerland, signed the Geneva International Convention of the Red Cross. The Convention stipulates international general principles for improving the situation of the wounded and sick in the battlefield, and stipulates that the wounded and aid organizations of various countries have the privilege of protection and the use of the Red Cross emblem. Since then, there has been the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the Red Cross Movement has also received legal protection internationally. The Convention stipulates that the red cross symbol on a white background means the neutrality of the organization protecting the relief work in the field and prisoners of war and their healthcare workers on both sides of the enemy in wartime. The International Committee of the Red Cross of China was established on May 29, 1904. At that time, a strange war broke out in the Far East: against Russia and Japan, the battlefield was on the Liaodong Peninsula of China, which claimed to be "neutral". In this bloody battle, the people who suffered the most were the people in the northeast of our country. The Qing government once sent ships to pick up refugees, but Russia refused. In order to provide relief to refugees in Northeast China, famous figures from Shanghai's business community, Shen Dunhe, Ren Xifen, Shi Zejing, etc., came forward to seek the support of the Consulate of a neutral country, and united with Chinese and foreign gentry businesspeople to call for the establishment of the International Committee of the Red Cross to provide relief to refugees. The purpose of the International Committee of the Red Cross in China at the beginning of its establishment was to rescue and compensate refugees in war zones. Early members of the International Committee of the Red Cross rescued 132,000 refugees and 230,000 people, and made outstanding contributions in difficult circumstances. In 1919, they joined the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva. After the founding of New China, in 1950, through consultations, the International Committee of the Red Cross of China was restructured, and Premier Zhou Enlai personally revised the constitution. After the reorganization, the International Committee of the Red Cross became a national people's health care organization of the People's Republic of China. In 1952, our country declared that it recognized the Geneva Conventions. As a result, the International Committee of the Red Cross of China became the first group to resume its legitimate seat in an international organization after the founding of New China. The purpose of the International Committee of the Red Cross in China is to save lives and help the wounded, to implement revolutionary humanitarianism, and to do a lot of work in health care training, rescue victims, investigation and conversion, patriotic health, exchange of prisoners of war, etc. With the progress and development of society, the scope of work of the International Committee of the Red Cross in our country continues to expand, the tasks continue to increase, such as blood transfusion and blood donation, Red Cross youth, international exchanges and other activities, it plays a special role in the disaster relief and disease prevention work of major natural disasters. In 1985, the International Committee of the Red Cross of China was elected as the executive director of the International Committee of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies Association. In 1989, the representative of our country was elected as the vice-chairperson of the association. The international influence of the Chinese International Committee of the Red Cross is increasing. It has made contributions to maintaining world peace and developing friendship among people of all countries in the International Red Cross Movement.
