On July 18, 2005 (June 13, 2005 lunar calendar), the United States provided India with civilian nuclear energy technology. On July 18, 2005, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Bush issued the "Joint Statement on Civil Nuclear Energy Cooperation" on behalf of the two governments. In the joint statement, Bush promised to push for changes to the domestic laws on nuclear export in the United States, open up legal channels for the provision of civilian nuclear fuel and nuclear technology to India, and persuade the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) to revise its guidelines to facilitate international cooperation with India.
