Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On June 10, 1929, British women entered the Cabinet for the first time
Ninety-six years ago today, on June 10, 1929 (May 4, 1929), a British woman entered the cabinet for the first time. Crowds gathered in Trafalgar Square in London to await the election results. On June 10, 1929, the newly elected British Prime Minister, Ramsey Macdonald, made his name again when he introduced the New Labour cabinet on the lawn outside 10 Downing Street. It was the first time in history that a female member of the cabinet was included in the cabinet. It was also the first time that the Prime Minister announced the list of his cabinet in front of the microphone and under the arc light of a talking film. The new woman in the cabinet was Margaret Bondfield. Macdonald called her "our old friend". Mr. Macdonald was an old actor in front of the camera, talking with ease until he introduced Miss Bondfield at the end. The new prime minister will have improved relations between Britain and the United States as one of his main goals. Mr. Macdonald also intends to restore diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union and implement a disarmament policy. On the domestic front, the priority is to reduce unemployment.
