On October 9, 1874, the Universal Postal Union was established
On this day 151 years ago, on October 9, 1874 (August 29, 1874 in the lunar calendar), the Universal Postal Union was established. Note: The picture shows the logo of the Universal Postal Union (UPU). October 9 is the 282nd day of the year in the Gregorian calendar (283rd day of leap year), and there are 83 days left before the end of the whole year. The Universal Postal Union is referred to as "Universal Postal Union". On October 9, 1874, representatives of 22 countries held the first International Postal Congress in Bern, the capital of Switzerland. At the meeting, a postal convention, the "Berne Convention", was signed, and it was decided to establish the General Postal Union. In May 1878, the General Postal Union held its second Congress. The Berne Convention was amended and renamed "Universal Postal Convention" after the modification, and the name of the organization was set as "Universal Postal Union". In July 1948, the UPU officially became a specialized agency of the United Nations on international postal affairs, with its headquarters in Bern, Switzerland. The purpose of the UPU is: to organize and improve international postal services, to promote the development of international postal business cooperation, and to carry out various postal technical assistance activities within its capabilities. The main bodies of the UPU are: Congress, Executive Council, Advisory Council and International Bureau. The Congress is the highest authority of the UPU and generally holds a plenary session every 5 years. The main tasks are to amend the regulations of the UPU, approve the work plan and budget, elect the members of the Executive Council and the Postal Research Advisory Council, and elect the head and deputy directors of the International Bureau. The Executive Council is a permanent body between the congresses and holds an annual meeting in order to coordinate and supervise all the activities of the UPU. The main tasks of the Postal Research Advisory Council are to study topics related to postal technology, business management, economic and technical cooperation. The International Bureau is the office of the UPU, headed by the General Directorate and supervised by the Swiss government. On 13 April 1972, the UPU Congress adopted a resolution formally recognizing the Government of the People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate representative of China in the UPU. On 8 May of the same year, our country informed the UPU of its decision to participate in all activities of the UPU. Since the early 1980s, our country has been a member of the UPU Executive Council and the Postal Research Advisory Council. In order to more widely publicize the significance of the postal service in the political, economic and cultural development of various countries and its role as a link in the friendly relations between the people of all countries, and to introduce the development history and achievements of the UPU, the 16th Congress of the UPU in 1969 unanimously decided to designate October 9, the day of the establishment of the UPU, as World Post Day, and asked member states to organize various commemorative and promotional activities on World Post Day every year since 1970. After the World Post Day was established, there was a worldwide publicity theme every year. After entering the 1980s, the themes were: "Post has no borders", "Cooperation and development promote the work of the UPU", "Post - the world's most extensive communication network", "Nothing can replace Post", "Post delivers the world's information to your door", "Post is the messenger of peace", "Post challenges distance", "Post is always there, everywhere", "Post, your global partner", "Post, your best choice" and so on. World Post Day - The 16th Universal Postal Union Congress, held in Tokyo, Japan in 1969, decided to designate October 9 of each year as Universal Postal Union Day to commemorate the founding of the Universal Postal Union (UPU, UniversalPostalUnion). In 1984, the 19th Universal Postal Union Congress, held in Hamburg, Germany, passed a resolution to change the name of Universal Postal Union Day to World Post Day.
