November 14, 1889 "Pillars of Arabic Literature" Taha Hussein's Birthday
136 years ago today, November 14, 1889 (October 22, 1889 in the lunar calendar), Taha Hussein, the "Pillar of Arab Literature", was born. It seems impossible that a blind child who has been blind since childhood will become a world-renowned literary hero when he grows up. However, it is true in real life. He is the famous Egyptian writer and literary critic Taha Hussein. Taha Hussein was born on November 14, 1889, in a small village near the small town of Magaga on the left bank of the Nile River in southern Egypt. My father worked as an employee in a sugar company with a low salary and many children. His life was extremely difficult. Taha was smart and lively since he was a child. When he was 3 years old, he was unfortunately blind due to eye diseases and became a blind child. However, Taha will never surrender to destiny. He will fight against destiny with a strong will. He began learning to recite the Koran, overcame many difficulties, studied tenaciously, and obtained a doctorate from the University of Egypt at the age of 25. Then, he went to France to study. He asked a French girl to teach him French and read books to him. Not only did he quickly master French, but he also learned several other languages. After the end of World War I, Taha completed his studies in France and taught at the University of Egypt after returning home. While translating and introducing Greek and Roman literature and art and the fruitful achievements since the European Renaissance, he also sorted out and studied ancient Arab cultural heritage and explored ways to develop Egyptian new literature. In 1926, he published the book "On Poetry in the Age of Obliteration", which comprehensively elaborated on his literary propositions. He put forward the slogan of "Everything starts from scratch" in his book, which was why he was attacked by conservatives. Taha persisted in writing despite adversity and created a large number of excellent works. In particular, his self-explanatory novel "Days" represents his thoughts and style and is considered to be an important milestone in Egyptian realistic literature. His prestige in the eyes of the Arab people is getting higher and higher. He has served in important positions such as editor-in-chief of literary magazines, president of Alexandria University, minister of education, president of the Arabic Language Association, director of the Cultural Committee of the League of Arab States, and chairman of the Egyptian Writers Association. He died in 1973. Taha is a loyal son of the Arab people and is very concerned about changing the backward face of Arabia. He believed: "We must first eliminate ignorance before poverty and disease can be eradicated." He attaches great importance to education and believes that education is "like air and water to the people." After he became Minister of Education, the first law he signed was the "Free Education Law." He made outstanding contributions to Arab culture. He has profound research on literature, history, philosophy, etc., and has written many books.
