May 24, 1935 The Red Army forcibly crossed the Dadu River
On this day, 90 years ago, on May 24, 1935 (April 22, 1935), the Red Army forcibly crossed the Dadu River. After the Zunyi Conference on the Luding Chain Bridge, Mao Zedong's leadership position within the party was established. At the most critical juncture, the party was saved, the Red Army was saved, and under the command of Mao Zedong's military ideology and great strategy and tactics, the victory of the Wujiang and Jinsha River battles was achieved. On the evening of May 24, 1935, the main force of the Red Army began to forcibly cross the Dadu River in the Anshunchang area on the south bank of the Dadu River. Anshunchang was originally the place where the Shida Kai North Crossing of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom failed. The terrain was dangerous. The mountains on both sides and the river valley in the middle had no room for maneuver. The Sichuan warlords once threatened that the Red Army would repeat the mistakes of Shida Kai. The Red Army attacked and captured the Anshunchang ferry, annihilated two enemy companies, captured one ferry, and controlled the south bank ferry. 17 warriors formed a commando team, braving the enemy's intensive firepower, bravely crossed the Dadu River, defeated an enemy battalion, and occupied the north bank ferry. The Red Army advanced north along the west bank with the second division to seize the Luding Bridge upstream; the main force of the first division continued to cross the river and cooperated with the second division to capture the Luding Bridge. At this time, all the bridge plates had been withdrawn, leaving only a few iron cables hanging in the air, and the enemy troops of two other brigades were rushing towards the Luding Bridge for reinforcements. From May 26, the Red Army advanced in the rain on the east and west roads of the Dadu River, breaking through several passages that the enemy was dangerously guarding, and rushed towards the Luding Bridge. The 2nd Division of the West Road preemptively occupied the west end of the bridge and organized the battle to seize the bridge. A commando team composed of 22 warriors from the 2nd Company of the 2nd Division, braved the enemy's intensive firepower, climbed the suspended iron chain and rushed to the opposite bank, occupying the east end of the bridge. The follow-up troops quickly crossed the river and captured Luding City, annihilated one regiment of the enemy, and successfully rendezvoused with the 1st Division on the east bank. In June 1935, after the Red Army crossed the Dadu River, it defeated four regiments of Sichuan warlords, crossed the first big snow mountain on the Long March, Jiayama Mountain, and successfully joined the four fronts.
