Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On August 14, 1740, Pope Pius VII was born
On this day, 285 years ago, on August 14, 1740 (June 22, the 1740 lunar calendar), Pope Pius VII was born. Pope Pius VII (August 14, 1740-August 20, 1823), formerly known as Giorgio Barnaba Luigi Chiaramonti, reigned from 1800 to 1823, was born in the city of Cesena, Emilia-Romagna district, northern Italy. Pius VII was forced to crown Napoleon I, the emperor of the First French Empire, but the crown was taken away by Napoleon during the accession ceremony and he himself crowned himself and his queen. Pius VII regarded this as a great humiliation. In 1809, Napoleon attacked Vienna and annexed the states under the Pope State. Pius VII was furious and announced that Napoleon would be excommunicated again. On July 6, 1809, Napoleon arrested Pope Pius VII of the Vatican and escorted him back to Savona for imprisonment. Pius VII was released only after Napoleon abdicated. At that time, French religion was already in chaos and had been in a state of disorder for a long time. In 1814, Pope Pius VII restored the Jesuit order, which had been dissolved by Pope Clement XIV in 1773. Comments: Pius VII paid great attention to doctrine, attached importance to doctrine, adjustment and reform; he was a strong-willed and fearless Pope, making important contributions to the Catholic Church.
