Breaking-News >> TodayHistory The famous Italian poet Ariosto was born
L. Ariosto (1474 - 1533) was an Italian poet during the Renaissance. Born on September 8, 1474, into a declining aristocratic family in Reggio, Emilia, northern Italy. Initially studied law, but he developed a strong interest in classical literature and humanism, studied hard, and achieved deep attainments. He entered the court of Ferrara in 1502 and served under the Duke of Este. He served as an administrator in remote mountainous areas. He was sent to Rome and other city-states many times and wrote some love poems and laments in Latin and common sayings in his early years. Among the more famous are seven "Satirical Poems", written between 1517 and 1525. They are letters to relatives and friends written in three rhymes, describing the frustrated situation. He criticized current politics with his comedies "Lena"(1528~1529),"The Witcher"(1528), etc., and the long legendary narrative poem "Crazy Roland" is his masterpiece. He began to write it in 1502 and was finalized in 1532, which took 30 years. The author borrows the popular genre of knight legends in the Middle Ages to reflect real life in Italy and express humanistic thoughts. He uses beautiful brushstrokes to depict the beauty of nature in order to express praise for life in this world; writing stories of young men and women of different religious beliefs who have the courage to overcome difficulties and obstacles and love passionately is a criticism of medieval religious prejudice and asceticism, and a tribute to love and heroic behavior. Full of patriotic passion, he condemned the disaster brought to Italy by foreign invaders and feudal monarchs, and demanded freedom, unity, peace and happiness for Italy. "Crazy Roland" is a picture of Italian social life during the Renaissance.
