Liu Xiu is the ninth grandson of Emperor Gaozu of Han Dynasty, the descendant of Liu Mai, the son of Wang Liufa of Changsha, the emperor of the Western Han Dynasty. He has the same great-grandfather as Emperor Gengshi. His father is Liu Qin of Nandon Ling and his mother is Fan Xian. He has lived in Caiyang, Nanyang (now southwest of Zaoyang, Hubei Province) for generations, and belongs to a local rich family. Since childhood, he has loved Yin Lihua, and later to Chang'an, he saw that Zhijinwu was very prosperous, because he sighed: "The eunuchs should be the Jinwu, and the wife should be the Yin Lihua."
