Twenty-seven years ago today, on September 15, 1998 (July 25, 1998 lunar calendar), our country's largest university, the New Zhejiang University, was born. Zhejiang University, the largest comprehensive university in our country with the most complete disciplines, was announced in Hangzhou this morning. President Jiang Zemin and Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Li Peng gave speeches for the newly established Zhejiang University. Vice Premier Li Lanqing of the State Council attended the inaugural meeting. Jiang Zemin's inscription was: Run Zhejiang University well and make greater contributions to the rejuvenation of the country through science and education. Li Peng's inscription was: Carry forward the excellent university phoenix and cultivate talents for the founding of the country. Li Lanqing pointed out at the founding meeting that in the past few years, significant progress has been made in the reform of the management system of colleges and universities, but the pace of reform should be further accelerated, breaking the pattern of fragmentation, through joint construction, adjustment, cooperation and merger, to promote the organic integration of fragmentation, optimize the allocation of educational resources, and rationally adjust the layout structure of schools. On this basis, it is necessary to establish some truly comprehensive universities to achieve complementary advantages, promote the penetration and integration of disciplines, give full play to comprehensive advantages, cultivate high-quality innovative talents, and bring the quality and level of higher education to a new level. The new Zhejiang University was formed by the merger of the original Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Agricultural University and Zhejiang Medical University. These four universities share the same historical origin. Since the founding of New China, after nearly half a century of development, teaching and scientific research achievements have been abundant, forming their own characteristics and advantages, and becoming national and provincial key institutions of higher learning respectively. The merged Zhejiang University will be a comprehensive university with the most complete disciplines in our country, including literature, history, philosophy, economics, management, teaching, science, engineering, agriculture, law, and medicine. There are 106 doctoral programs, 13 national key disciplines, 10 national key laboratories, two national engineering research centers, and two national engineering technology research centers. The university has more than 5,000 doctoral and master's students, more than 30,000 full-time students, and more than 800 professors among the more than 10,000 faculty and staff. Strong teaching and scientific research strength has created conditions for building Zhejiang University into a high-level comprehensive, research-oriented and innovative university and moving towards a world-class university. The new Zhejiang University is a university directly under the Ministry of Education and is jointly managed by the Ministry of Education and Zhejiang Province. The new president of Zhejiang University is Pan Yunhe, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a computer expert.
