He was first a gangster figure, then gradually made a fortune, and eventually became an FBI informant due to his desperation. The protagonist of the 1991 director Martin Scorsese's classic film "Goodfellas" was based on Hill, which made Hill a celebrity. After becoming an FBI informant, Hill was protected and started a new life. But in the early 1990s, Hill was removed from the witness protection program after multiple drug arrests. At first he feared reprisals, but over time many of his enemies died. In his later years, Hill lived a more public and relaxed life, having lived most of his life with drugs. He was convicted of public drug use in 2008 and arrested in 2009 for disorderly behavior after taking drugs. "I tried almost every drug, and I couldn't control my alcohol addiction," he said in an interview with The Associated Press in 2009. Hill died in hospital on June 12, 2012. On June 13, Hill's girlfriend, Lisa Caserta, informed The Associated Press of his death. Hill had undergone heart surgery in 2011, and he died from complications from long-term heart problems related to smoking. Note: The American movie GoodFellas is based on the true story of Henry Hill. See Thieves also have a way.
