On November 1, 1958, Lumumba was arrested in Congo
On this day, 67 years ago, on November 1, 1958 (September 20, 1958), Lumumba was arrested in Congo. November 1, 1958. Patwes Lumumba, the Congolese nationalist leader, was arrested after rioting in Stanleyville and Mangobo. Lumumba was accused of inciting riots by speaking publicly after a meeting of nationalist parties. The meeting adopted a plan to boycott the elections, "liberate immediately" Congo and "mobilize to end the Belgian occupation." In later speeches, Lumumba went further, using fiery words to criticize the Belgian authorities and Congolese moderates. He also condemned any collusion with Belgium, while strongly urging Congolese residents to take advantage of massive popular resistance. Shortly after Mr. Lumumba spoke, there was a riot inside the Stanleyville prison. Congolese prisoners refused to return to their cells and threw stones at European prisoners, and the police were called in with tear gas to disperse the crowd. In Mangobo, thousands of people armed with bricks, guns, bows and arrows marched through the streets to fight the police, shouting: "Independence! Attack the white people!" About 20 rioters were killed and 100 wounded. Fourteen police officers were injured in the riots.
