The Fourth World Conference on Women concluded on September 15, 1995
Thirty years ago today, on September 15, 1995 (August 21, 1995 in the lunar calendar), the Fourth World Conference on Women concluded. The NGO Women's Forum held in Huairou, the Beijing Scenic Area, also achieved a complete success as an auxiliary meeting of the Fourth World Conference on Women. A total of 17,600 people attended the World Conference on Women, and more than 30,000 people participated in the NGO Women's Forum. At the plenary meeting held this morning, Peruvian President Fujimori and Norway Prime Minister Brundtland made warm speeches as guests of the World Conference. They promised to conscientiously implement the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action in their own countries. Statements were also made by representatives of the non-governmental organization Youth Federation and the President of the World Bank. After the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action were adopted at this afternoon's plenary meeting, representatives from more than 30 countries including Peru, Iraq and Oman spoke one after another. The meeting adopted the Mexico Declaration and the World Plan of Action. The Second World Conference on Women was held in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, from July 14 to 31, 1980. More than 2000 representatives from 145 Member States of the United Nations and relevant organizations and agencies of the United Nations system attended the meeting. The NGO Forum was attended by 8000 people. Kang Keqing, Chairman of the All-China Women's Federation of China, led a China government delegation to attend the meeting. The meeting adopted the "Plan of Action for the Second Half of the United Nations Decade for Women". The Third World Conference on Women was held in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, from July 13 to 26, 1985. About 6000 people from 157 United Nations Member States and representatives of the United Nations, relevant intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations attended the meeting. About 15000 people attended the NGO Forum. China State Councilor Chen Muhua led a China government delegation to attend the meeting. The meeting adopted the Nairobi Strategy.
