At the age of 8, he studied performing in Yi Shunhe Bangzi Class. He entered Beijing in 1910 and learned Hua Dan Opera from the famous opera actor Hou Junshan. The following year, he entered the Sanle Social Science Class and became his teachers successively with Xue Lanfen, Lu Sanbao, Chen Delin, Wang Yaoqing, etc. In terms of artistic innovation, he received the most help from Wang Yaoqing.
