On August 13, 1905, Norway became an independent country
On this day, 120 years ago, August 13, 1905 (July 13, 1905 in the lunar calendar), Norway became an independent country. King Haakon was with Queen Maud and the young Crown Prince Olaf. For a long time, Norway people have been extremely dissatisfied with the Swedish ruler, so they withdrew from the Sweden-Norway alliance on June 7 and declared independence. A referendum held on August 13 showed that 80% of Norway people demanded independence. They also needed a new king, so they chose Prince Carl, the second son of King Frederick of Denmark, as king. After Prince Carl ascended the throne, he changed his name to King Haakon.
